Problem

If you’re a student there are times when you may feel as if your freedom of speech may be compromised. A teacher may be too busy to listen, a student may be shy, a student may be afraid of potential consequences or facing the repercussions from peers such as bullying.

Solution

Our Solution Has Two Parts: The forum is a place where students can anonymously discuss a problem. This allows students to anonymously express their concerns with a group of their peers. The forum will provide a safe space for allowing your voice to be heard. It allows you to establish a sense of community throughout your school. The second part is the anonymous teacher messenger. Students can directly address teachers regarding their concerns. A student can message the teacher they are most comfortable with in hopes of getting their voice heard in a non judgemental way. Student have the option in this model to remain anonymous or reveal themselves.

Freedom of speech

This contributes to Freedom of Speech because often a teacher is too busy or distracted to listen to a student, or a student may be too shy or may be afraid of repercussions from being seen raising a concern to a teacher. A student’s voice becomes limited. With our website, we are creating a way for students to voice themselves in these situations. When they normally would not be able to make themselves heard, students can express themselves without fear.

Next Steps

In the future, each school can have their own version of this website, so that students would only be communicating with other students in their own community. Students will be able to provide each other with learning tools outside of class. The website will be a gathering place for students to help each other with what they learned in class, and expand their knowledge with new information.
